VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION & VIN NUMBERS
We can provide access to critical vehicle attributes like year, make, model, body style, engine number, CC rating and transmission along with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
These details are captured by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) when a vehicle is first registered and then held centrally in the Motor Vehicle Register (MVR).
WHAT IS A VIN NUMBER?
A VIN number is a unique code, including a serial number, used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles, towed vehicles, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds. VIN numbers can commonly be found on a vehicle’s firewall and door jambs.
WHAT IS AN ENGINE NUMBER?
An engine number is an identification number marked on the vehicle’s engine by the manufacturer. The engine number includes coded information, which can be decoded to reveal, for example, year of manufacture, country of manufacture, and engine type.
WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?
Access to accurate real-time vehicle identification data is extremely important for most automotive businesses or any industry that regularly interacts with vehicles.
The vehicle’s VIN number along with its key attributes like year, make & model are the vehicle’s DNA and can be used to track back to the OEM equipment that came with the vehicle. This data is also important when working out what parts suit a particular vehicle.
As the VIN is stamped on the vehicle and cannot be altered it is the only constant identifier throughout a vehicle’s life. Number plates may change when a vehicle moves between states or has a personalised plate fitted, so the VIN number can link a vehicle’s history regardless of its plate number.
We can provide these key vehicle attributes with a simple rego lookup so your customers don’t need to manually enter this data (and risk getting it wrong).
